Last night in...Greenpoint

| 2 comments:
Last night I went to WORD in Greenpoint (which is a pretty great indie bookstore I'd never been to!) for the launch party of Emily St. John Mandel's new book, The Singer's Gun. You may remember Ms. Mandel from her previous (and first) novel, Last Night in Montreal, that was all the rage in the book blog community last summer. The Singer's Gun just hit shelves yesterday, but it's already getting rave reviews and is the #1 Indie Next Pick for May. I'm about a third of the way through it, and I'm loving it so far. She is BRILLIANT with how well she layers the story and reveals more information—brilliant to the point where it probably demands a second read to fully realize all of the brilliance [I realized a bit of it last night when she read aloud an excerpt I've already read and more details clicked into place now that I've read beyond that passage].

Anyway, after Emily did a brief reading, she answered a few audience questions [did you know she went to university for dancing and somehow ended up a writer?], administered a contest for WORD giftcards [with these cute little passports made by Emily herself], and signed some books.

I had a great time and was so excited to meet such a talented new(ish) author. You can check out the other stops on her book tour here. And just a heads up to those attending BEA: Emily will be there.

Review coming on this one soon!

Also, I met another newly published author, Joseph Wallace, whose debut novel Diamond Ruby was released by Simon & Schuster yesterday as well. It's another New York-centric book, so I'm prettttty excited to get my hands on it.

Good Ol' Girls Gone Wild

| No comments:
One very important thing about me that you may or may not already know: I am Southern. I did grow up with running water (contrary to the belief of my Northern friends), I am not Republican, and I barely have an accent, but the South is in my blood. It's the characteristic about myself that I cling to the most while living up here in Yankee-land.

Another thing you may have noticed: Jill McCorkle is one of my favorite authors because she reaches out to that Southern part of me. She's able to capture that distinct Southern-ness without being too overt, by just describing day-to-day life.

So imagine my joy when I find out that a musical is opening Off-Broadway that is based on the stories of Jill McCorkle and fellow Southern author Lee Smith! And even better, my boyfriend Colin works for the theater agency that represents the writer and director, so he got us tickets during the show's previews!

Good Ol' Girls is a musical about life and love told through the stories and songs of five women of various age. For the most part, it celebrates life from beginning to end, including just a hint of the troubles everyone faces. To define it as a typical musical with a plot would be incorrect—it's more a series of vignettes broken up with songs that are just enough to get a deep look at one small aspect of a woman's life before it changes focus.

The music was great and the venue is small enough that the audience is real connected with the women and musicians on stage. And I found them all to be fabulous. Colin claims that parts felt a bit exaggerated...and maybe if I actually lived in the South, I'd feel a bit like it was portraying us a bit inaccurately. But you know what...I live in the North where people drink Pepsi and complain about humidity so I got a kick out of it all, exaggerated or not.

If you're in the NYC area, check it out sometime between now and April 11th!

OCTOBER Book Events: New York

| 4 comments:
An interesting mix this month. Some big author names like Audrey Niffenegger, Michael Chabon, Jhumpa Lahiri, Gore Vidal, Chuck Klosterman, and John Irving. BUT, you can also see the infamous Julie Andrews, Mario "AC Slater" Lopez, Andy Williams (he's still ALIVE??), Richard Belzer (SVU anyone?), and Paul Shaffer...yes, the obligatory musician sidekick of Dave Letterman.

And perhaps my most favorite...should you be a huge fan of Clueless, you're in luck—Alicia Silverstone and Wallace Shawn in the same month! Inconceivable!

Saturday Afternoon with John

| 5 comments:
This is mostly a gushy girl post, but books will be briefly involved.

I spent a nice little Saturday afternoon at the McNally Jackson bookstore in Soho with John Krasinski. Did you know that your favorite star of The Office has recently written and directed his very first movie? He has, and that movie is Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, based on the novel of the same name by author David Foster Wallace.

The reading was set for 5:00pm, but, to be honest, I got my boyfriend to call the bookstore ahead of time and find out what time I should show up to "avoid the screaming girls." [Obviously I couldn't call, because I am a girl and my request would not be as believable.]

My friend Kati and I arrived around 4:00 and hovered around the set-up of chairs to ensure a close spot. As we sat in our coveted 2nd row seats [because 1st row is just too close to un-awkwardly take pictures of someone standing right in front of you] and as 5:20 rolled around, we see through the storefront windows a tall, dashing man jogging down the sidewalk towards the bookstore door as pedestrians turned their heads and probably said, "Wait, wasn't that...."

He did a reading from the book, which was very funny and introduced me to a book I knew little about. Then he did a Q&A. But he was admittedly nervous and doing that trick where you look just above the audience to avoid direct eye contact [which I understand...I mean, I was in the 2nd row and only about 6 feet away from him]. I was, therefore, determined that I WOULD make eye contact with John Krasinski and asked him [with a semi-functioning voice] if he wanted to write and direct in the future, or if it needed to be a project that was special to him. He said something about passion fueling your drive and energy for a project, so it needed to be special. But I'm gonna be honest...I was too occupied with the realization that JOHN KRASINSKI was speaking to ME for those glorious 45-60 seconds, that I can't recall everything he said.

Then he did a signing, and because of our location and willingness to help move chairs away from the autograph table, we were right at the front of the line. So we spoke to John even more, and he wrote my name and 'Thanks for the question!' And I walked out of the bookstore feeling both successful and all tingly inside.

Check out the trailer for Brief Interviews With Hideous Men. Or read the book!

JULY Booking Events: New York

| 1 comment:
Seeing as how we're based in the Big Apple, the capital of the publishing world and a hot-stop for many author tours, I've decided to start posting a monthly list of author or book events at local bookstores, libraries, or parks.  I'll try to keep it well updated throughout the month and will announce anything new on Twitter.

Be sure to send me any exciting events you hear about, since I know I'll never be able to catch everything by myself!
