She was interesting, too!

And I have Paris Was Ours on my To Buy list...I'm looking forward to reading it.softdrinknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5081916964396312801.post-64275308437240063752011-08-01T13:52:15.380-05:002011-08-01T13:52:15.380-05:00That's a really good point; the objectivity pr...That's a really good point; the objectivity prevented any tone of whining, so I'm certain that was her goal. Still, it frustrated me as the reader, just because it seemed from her narrative that it took so long for her to actually DO anything about her situation. Thank goodness she had the older sister to take the first step of getting OUT.

Side note: nothing comes up in a Google image search on pictures of her family! Am I the only one that wants to see what these people look like???I believe you're right about Walls as a journalist as well. I'm sure that helped her maintain her objective stance while telling both sides of the story--for all the terrible things her parents did, it's also clear that they loved their children. It's been a while since I listened to The Glass Castle, but I think that objectivity is exactly what made it work. If every time she told a story about her childhood, she'd talked about how sad and angry and hurt she was by it, the reader/listener would eventually be like, OK already! You had a terrible childhood--get over it! Instead, I found myself getting so worked up that I would actually pause the audio to yell things like, "WHY AREN'T YOU MORE PISSED OFF ABOUT THIS???" LOL!
